WATERVLIET -- Fred Martin Jackson Sr., Colljack, 84, of Broadway, died Friday, April 7, 2006 at St. Peter's Hospital in Troy. Born in White River Junction, Vt. on September 4, 1921, he was the son of the late Louis T. and Margaret Herrington Jackson. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a gunner's mate attached to the Merchant Marine. Two of the ships he served on were sunk in the Atlantic; surviving for two weeks in a life raft awaiting rescue, earning him the nickname, Lucky. He was employed since 1940 at the Menands Market. He worked as a truck driver, ran the Menands Market Restaurant and, most recently, as a security officer. Together with his wife Helen, he was the owner of Colljacks Sporting Goods on Broadway in Watervliet for 32 years. He was an accomplished gunsmith, repairing all makes of rifles and handguns as well as designing and making guns from rough stock and barrel to a finished masterpiece. His custom rifles are still sought after today. He was an avid sportsman and loved hunting for both small and large game, especially white-tailed deer in the Catskills. He spent many hours fishing for bass and trout as well. Above all else, he loved his family. Even when he worked two jobs, he set aside Sundays for short trips to battlefields and museums. He was the husband of the late Helen G. Crusious Jackson; father of Marilyn F. Mein of Watervliet, Fred M. Jackson Jr. of Plattsburgh, Cleo A. Jackson of Duanesburg, Paula C. Flynn of Watervliet and Toronto and Thomas L. Jackson of Vt.; brother of Elizabeth Corcoran, Pauline Baker and the late Virginia Maltais; grandfather of Ronald Boisvert Jr., Diana LaBounty, Scott Boisvert, Joanne Alix, Michael Mein, Geraldine Colliton, Colleen Reedy, Shawn, Brian and Caroline Curley; and 19 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet. Interment, Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church and former member of the St. Joseph's Women's Club. She was a 55-year resident of Woodsville. Over the years, her crafts, crocheted and knitted items, were an integral part of the St. Joseph's Christmas Fair. She was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred A. Baker, on Sept. 12, 1997. Survivors include a son, the Rev. W. Pierre Baker, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church of Rochester, and St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church of Farmington; a stepdaughter, Annette Anson of Longmont, Colo.; a sister, Virginia Maltais of Concord.
